I've worked it out. Two issues are at hand - The building of the examples.bar from the examples folder does *not* include the *.ftl files so the forms are not included. You could include them by adding an include line in the build.xml file - But then the forms are in a subdir /org/jbpm/.... and the taskform engine does *not* look for them there.
