Eval CEs are executed once for each tuple that matches all previous patterns. So, you are right: action will be executed 10 times for each id and eval will be executed 1 time for each id. To understand better how forward rule engines work, there are some books and articles listed in JBoss Rules project page. I can personally recomend "Expert Systems..." by Gary Riley. And don't worry about asking. NPE when retracting the objects in working memory...

RE: [rules-users] Problems with Decision Table

Hi Heli. I was doing something similar in a DT and it took ages to figure it out. I was trying to compare dates from two different bound objects. I wanted to know if one date was later than the other. To compund the problem, the value in the condition cell (the user editable part) needed to be true or false. I ended up putting the whole thing in an eval() statement like this: eval(obj1.getDate().before(obj2.getDate()) == $1) Using similar logic, yours might look like this: eval(obj1.getDateField().before(new Date()) == $1) The construct new Date() should be the current date/time. The eval() statement will return either true or false, so put that in your condition cell. Convert logic to DRL rules

Hello, I am a new Drools user trying to convert the following simple logic into DRL: IF (Person.Age > 35 OR Person.Age < 25) AND (Person.ZipCode = 23546 or Person.ZipCode = 68590) THEN Person.Status = "KT"; I found that it is not easy to convert the above logic into ONE DRL rule. I tried something like this when $a: Person(age>35) or Person (age<25) $b: Person(Zipcode==23456) or Person (ZipCode == 68590) $c: $a and $b Then $c.setStatus("KT") But looks like I can not use $c: $a and $b becaue in Drools, you can only bind variable to column, not to other varaibles. Please advise how to do this. I would imagine this should be quite simple, maybe I missed something quite obvious. I know that I can write custom Java method to do this, but if I do that, I suppose I lose the power of RETEOO pattern matching (pattern resuing, etc.). So I prefer not to do that. I also understand I can break the above logic into 4 rules and that would be quite easy, but our business user is not used to think in that way. Also, we have more complex logic than the above. So what I want is to see if there is a way to convert this kind of logic in ONE DRL rule. Thanks in advance. Bill

Is 3.1 M1 backward compatible?

Hi all, the attached example runs ok (slow but ok) on JBoss Rules 3.0.5 Now when I run it with 3.1M1 I have an exception (I pasted it at the end of the mail). Is 3.1 M1 backward compatible? Is this a bug? Should I change the code in some way? accumulate / collect behaviour question - another stupid question

Hi, Edson quoted the following sample rule some time ago: rule "transaction consistency" when Transaction( $id : id ) $credits: Double( ) from accumulate( TransactionEntry( id == $id, operation == "credit", $amount : amount ), init( double balance = 0 ), action( balance += $amount ), result( new Double( balance ) ) ); $debits: Double( ) from accumulate( TransactionEntry( id == $id, operation == "debit", $amount : amount ), init( double balance = 0 ), action( balance -= $amount ), result( new Double( balance ) ) ); eval( ! $credits.equals( $debits ) ) then // inconsistency for transaction $id End If there are 100 transactions overall and only 10 unique transaction ids (eg, id = 1..10), so that we have on average 10 Transaction facts per id, - how many times will 'eval' be called? - how many times will the action be called, assuming 'eval' always returns 'true'? I guess the answer for the above should be '10 times', once per each id? What if I put another eval statement like "eval($id == 1)" after existing 'eval'? Would that be evaluated 100 times (for all Transaction facts) or only 10 times (once per unique id)? I think I'm missing quite significant piece on how tuples are selected in DROOLS and how 'eval' and new 'from accumulate' features work.... Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! "not" combined with predicate?

Does anyone know if there is a problem using a "not" combined with a predicate expression? Drools gives me a NullPointerException sometimes when evaluating my predicate. The example from the user guide is: Person( girlAge : age, sex = "F" ) Person( boyAge : age -> ( girlAge.intValue() == boyAge.intValue() + 2 ), sex = 'M' ) Buy I'm trying something similar to: Person( girlAge : age, sex = "F" ) not Person( boyAge : age -> ( girlAge.intValue() == boyAge.intValue() + 2 ), sex = 'M' ) And also: Person( girlAge : age, sex = "F" ) not Person( boyAge : age, sex = 'M' ) eval ( girlAge.intValue() == boyAge.intValue() + 2 ) Is there anything wrong with these? The compiler does not have a problem with the former, but does not like the latter. I'm using Drools 3.0.5. I'm basically trying to say "there is a girl, and there is not a boy whose age is 2 years less than the girl". Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Chris West

Another upgrade to 3.0.5 question

All, OK, in my current 2.1 version of my app, I have 8 different rules files that have different sets of rules. In looking at 3.0.5 [and maybe this existed previously, but I missed it], there is a method on PackageBuilder called addPackageFromDrl. Can I load all the individual sets into 1 rule package? Then Drools will determine which rules to fire based upon what objects are asserted into working memory? The reason I came to this is I was looking at the Spring integration and was wondering if I should have 1 RuleBased of the 8 individual ones like I have today. Thoughts and Suggestion Welcome! Ron

In effect, is such construct is allowed now in 3.1M? not ( exists MyObject2(field == 'value') ) I'm just not sure what 'not' element as an 'existential operation' will do in case it's passed 'boolean' result as an operand. Would it act as a logical negation? I understand that the above construct can be simply expressed by removing 'exists' altogether, but the problem is that the above is the result of 'automatic template' generation (ie, there is a sequence of columns with 'exists' and 'not' elements and in case there is only one such element the generation might result in the above construct).
