[Design of Kosmos] - Deploy failure on Liferay

I have been trying to install kosmos 0.2RC2 on Liferay 4.1.3 and Tomcat 5.20 on XP without success and have reached a brick wall despite reading all the manuals I can find. Much of which does not correspond to the files and directories I have.
I have tried copying the liferay portal and server directories to tomcat webapps, but nothing happened, and the link in the reference to liferay hot deploy is invalid.
I tried installing the generic .war download, and have had to edit the deploy files but have been able to build the .war file to install. however on deploy I get the following error:

I agree that an MBean has a natural fit with our needs. However, the current codebase does not require any support from the AS, and using MBeans will tie us to an AS/MK/MC again. A JMS provider is the only EE component we current need. So I'm not sure Mark willing to compromise any of the current 'leightness' of the solution. Also keep in mind that we will also suppport JBI in the future, which supports similar deployment features as you described for the mbeans, where code and configuration are deployed as one unit.
On the plane ride home I had some time to think about our current deployment configuration file and I came to the following example xml:

Basically what I did is to 'normalize' the current listener and action configuration and to add that configuration to either a 'service', 'channel', 'server' or 'host'.
I kept 1 configuration file for ALL the esb configuration (yes there apart from the properties set through the PropertyManager). This allows use to:
| 1. generate the boiled down configuration for each server. (similar to the one above, but specific for that server)
| 2. draw a picture of the esb configuaration as a whole, along with the connections (channels) and the servers they run on (along with info about their physical host).
| 3. I'm working on the xsd for the config, so we can do a level0 sanity check.
| 4. We can check if that all services are registered in the registry, before continuing (rather then build in a Thread sleep). I know we could do this with MBean dependency too if we decide to go this way.
| 5. Each server can check if the channels they are supposed to access are up and running: 'can connect to ftp server' or 'can connect to jms-server'
| 6. We can send in test messages a la nagios (synthetic tests) on startup or on a regular basis.

| For RC I think we need 1 through 4 and the tasks should be performed by the esb bootstrapper, which also reads the properties file.

| BTW I think when the ESB tries to connect to a channel we should keep on trying, log on failure, but keep on trying so that we can recover from nodes being brought up out of order (or temporary network failure).

| I think this should greatly reduce the complexity of configuring the esb and we can provide detail error messages, of which we are in dire need.

| I'd love to hear your feedback. I will follow up with my ideas on packaging on the other thread. We can go many ways on this!

[Design of JCA on JBoss] - JBossTS/JBossJCA XA/Local transactions

JBossTS does not support he use of multiple resources with LocalTransactions. As a result, I can see this causing issue with both previous applications attempting to migrate to JBoss5 as well as new development efforts that do not want to use XA (for whatever reason) or cannot afforce XA for whatever reason.
Since this functionality exists in JBossTM, I believe this warrants some discussion.

Componetising the ESB codebase at this point is not something I can comment on, this is really a question for the others as they have been responsible for the work.
To date I have been involved very little with the ESB project except for the initial design work that Mark and I undertook at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately TS has kept me very busy this year. :-)
Since the release of TS4.2.2, and with Jonathan's recruitment, I now have time where I can ramp up my involvement with ESB.
The codebase, as it currently stands, is an evolution of the rosetta codebase but it is still evolving. The people involved, both internally and in the community, have done a fantastic job to get it to the position it is in today. We still have a lot of work to do so that we can fulfill our vision of the ESB and I see MC/OSGi as a very important part of that evolution.

Again, I hope you realize that if HotSwap is not used, this requires a recycling of classloaders of the component as well as any classloaders of dependent components. For instance, change an @Entity bean, and you have to cycle the classloader of EJBs that reference it, then the classloaders of the WARs that reference the EJBs (if you're using @Local).

I hope you realize that this isn't some cross-cutting functionality that you can just snap on. Since classloaders have to be recycled, this means all affected containers (web, ejb, and hibernate) have to do some re-initialization. For instance, the EJB container references tons of Class, Method and Field objects that will need to be recycled. Maybe what we could do is write a parallel reflection hierarchy that just delegates to real reflection objects. This reflection model could register itself with the classloader of the real reflection object. The classloader could ask registered reflection objects to recycle themselves upon classloader recycling. (Say that 5 times fast).
BTW, Each component type is going to need to be seriously refactored to support optimized redeployment. (BTW, with my measurements with E-EJB3, Hibernate is the biggest hog at boottime).
What it boils down to is that there's TONS and TONS of work to do before we can even think about adding HTTP Session/ SFSB serialization (and I think this idea is just a toy anyways...)

To answer some of your questions earlier:
1 - EAR packaging - that will go away very shortly. We only have the EJB notification from the old codebase which will be removed by Tom shortly. I have already removed the old object store mechanism. We essentially only need standalone JARs right now, which can be dropped in the server/lib to make use of the ESB services inside of a J2EE app.
2 - properties - all properties were moved to use the TS property manager a few months ago (since the beta1).

two questions for you:
1) why do you want to wait for the MC (or an OSGi personality on top of the MC) in order to compenentize the ESB? Is that by lack of time or by lack of features from the MK?
2) from a cofiguration standpoint, why are you relying on a TS specific configuration mechanism rather than on the AS/MK/MC standard mechanism? Per lack of feature of the MK or for some other reason?
Also, while I might be wrong, I do think the current ESB properties are JVM-wide: I think they are being loaded by the System Properties MBean, but I might be wrong.
On the two points above, I think they are pretty important as they really define how new users will discover our ESB and learn how to use/configure it.
