the jsf implementation we use is written for java 5 and david backported it to 1.4 with jboss retro. jboss retro requires 2 jars at runtime, which are in the 4.0.4.GA distro, but not in the 4.0.4 patch 1 EJB profile. depending on where you deploy you have to add the libs to our web app. to make it more convenient, david proposed to add them anyway. the alternative is that we start creating web apps with various kinds of libraries included for deployment on different versions of each server. I sort of liked Replicable myself, it fits with the naming theme of Serializable and Externalizable. People are capable of dealing with new words in computing, just think of words like deprecated and obfuscate. JBossRetro is really just some ant tasks to run javassist expression editors, class redirects and some byte code fixup over a set of classes. (Plus another task to verify the operation, i.e. look for missing bits not retroed). In its most generic form it would be just that, with the actions coming from configuration, whether in the ant task itself, a properties file or some bootstrap class that initalises what actions are done. aopc is the same, in fact, JBossRetro is copied from JBossRetro. Another todo is to be able to run aopc and JBossRetro in "one pass", i.e. have a single task that does both. I have a small preference for @Replicated too, only because I had to look "replicable" up on dictionary.com to confirm that that's the correct word for the meaning ("replicatable" is not a word.) Re: Serializable semantics, one thing that sucks about them is there's no way to turn it off; i.e. indicate "this subclass isn't Serializable". Maybe not an issue here, but it's a pain in the case of Serializable. The problem was that the call to KernelControllerContextAware.setControllerContext() was happening as part of the InstantiateAction, i.e. before the bean was configured. In other words, when it was serialized/bound into jndi the state had not been set yet. I have moved the KernelControllerContextAware.set/unsetControllerContext() calls to the ConfigureAction for now, but we do need something a bit more fine-grained for these life-cycle aspects. I think you can always change the name until beta2 or 3... I vote for @Replicated and *no* sub-annotation: if Person is @Replicated, then Student (subclass) should be @Replicated too ! Same semantics as for Serializable...
