Yes, it would impact things, although hopefully not in a problematic way. I haven't thought it through, but I'd think what I described above could be added in a later 5.x release without any overly-bad compatibility issues. We'd just have to make sure that webapps configured the old way still work. That's really an issue in the AS code. For 2.0.0 if we can think a bit about the Cloneable implementation of the configuration classes, that would be great.
