I don't know that cache.getServiceName() returns null on WebSphere. I wasn't familiar with the preregistration callback processing which I guess you're indicating should populate the name. The ObjectInstance technique does work; that's how I've verified that WebSphere modifies the original name during the registration process. I'll have to try getServiceName() and see what it returns. It will take me a while to try this as I don't have a personal install of WebSphere that I can use for testing.
