For IM check out Jive's Wildfire:
http://www.jivesoftware.org/wildfire/
It's a Java implementation of the Jabber protocols. We've been running an older
version of it for a while now and it's great! We're running it as a war.
I don't know what the status of the new stuff is, but there was talk of running it as
an MBean in JBoss. It's open source and free. The community there is great and very
supportive. It's easy to extend too.
Besides all the Jabber clients that can use it, there is a web based one called JWChat
that's available as a war.
Jive also has their own Jabber java client as well as a Java API for Jabber.
I'd guess it'd be rather easy to get JBCS talking with Wildfire.
