Its certainly too late to change for 5.x, but I know we want to revamp things for 6.x. Part of the issue is that the profile service is several functional layers, and the ManagementView evolved to a client side notion of ManagedDeployment/ManagedComponent over ManagedObject. We do need to cleanup the server object usage. Both the ManagedDeployment and ManagedProperty do return references to ManagedObject right now.
