looking over all the comments i see a different conclusion:
a separate search criteria form at the top of the page. that form should be toggelable
and it should be collapsed by default so that only a link with search criteria is visible
at the top of the table.
from the comments i distill two main advantages for a separate search criteria form:
1) a separate form shows its purpose better. with the current inline search criteria
fields it might not be clear to a user why these fields are their.
2) flexibility: a separate search form might give you more filter options then just text
per column. e.g. a checkbox to filter out all but the latest versions of a process
definition.
