I'm not what you can call an 'active developer' of JBP, but as long as this thread is about layouts and themes, I'd just like to throw in my 2 cents... One *wonderful* feature I was happy to discover in JBP is the ability to externalize the theme and layout definitions. I'd *definitely* maintain that for production environment simplicity. It's sooo simpler to make updates without having to redeploy the whole portal...
