I updated the repositories, so that the pom can now pick up snapshots, and updated the parent version to 2 (same thing you did). That takes care of the first issue. The second issue look like a problem with the assembly plugin. If you comment out the assembly plugin config in kernel/pom.xml you will be able to build the project.
