New JDBC Driver in 6.2
by Ramesh Reddy
Teiid has on its road map to introduce Server platform in 6.2 release.
Client applications can access Teiid using a new JDBC driver called
"org.teiid.jdbc.TeiidDriver". At the same time we are
retiring/deprecating the legacy "com.metamatrix.jdbc.MMDriver" that is
based on old legacy Server from MetaMatrix days. For backward
compatibility purposes, this new driver will still support the old URL
format.

No, we have not looked at implementing any of jsr 114. Sun already provides a reference implementation under the com.sun packaging if someone wants to use the functionality.

Subject: [teiid-dev] WebRowSet
Has there ever been any discussions/investigations into implementing WebRowSet in the teiid jdbc driver? (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/javax/sql/rowset/WebRowSet.html) It seems to me that there might be some advantage to developers creating web apps or messaging based apps were we to produce XML.

Changes in Admin API in 6.2
by Ramesh Reddy
Admin API will be changing in the 6.2 release of the project. There are
couple different major changes and some minor changes involving the
Admin API.
1) Previously the "embedded" and "server" runtimes defined and
implemented slightly different Admin API methods, which were derived
from a common set of interfaces. Starting with 6.2, these both APIs will
be combined into single API, that covers both runtime modes.
2) The package name for the API is changed to "org.teiid.adminapi"
3) There will be some minor changes in terms of API methods itself.
Please note that we are very cautious about changes here, to keep the
backwards compatibility.
Any management tools using the Admin API, need to update their code to
the latest API to be compatible with 6.2 version.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

What I would like to see come out of this is THE API that is used to create relational metadata for Teiid. It should be complete for our entire relational model, and it should be extensible like the current model. It could then be implemented and exposed in all of the places where we will allow metadata to be provided (whereever that may be). Users would then have two options for supplying metadata, the serialized form that we decided upon, and the API.
A Teiid user who decided to integrate their source with Teiid could then create the code that maps their source metadata to our relational object model once, and then plug that into the place where they want to define metadata. Maybe it's the connector, maybe it's an importer in Designer, maybe it's the shell, maybe all of them, we don't really know what going to be available.
In the places where we implement this API, we're smart about what we do with it. The Teiid connector implementation could be free to ignore any metadata it doesn't need, the Designer impl writes it all to the serialized form. Users don't really care about XMI or index files, they want simplicity and ease, and we can give it to them.

Re: [teiid-dev] 6.2 planning
by John Doyle
I want to discuss the proposal to modify the connector api to produce runtime metadata objects from
source metadata a bit; firstly to confirm my correct understanding and ensure that I'm understanding the full value.
If I understand the proposal, the connector API would be expanded so the connector can provide the metadata of the source system via an object representation akin to JDBC metadata. This would allow a user of Teiid embedded to create bindings to source systems and query those systems without any model or VDB. Users would be able to submit queries to Teiid that joined across the source systems much like they would write in a transformation for a view model. Is all of this correct?
Unless I'm missing some additional utility of this approach, I don't really see much value in this approach. On the contrary, I think it undermines the value of Teiid by offering federation without much abstraction. I don't see how this leads to application code that significantly less brittle than what users would write without us, and I think it leads users down a dead end. Much of the code they create around this approach would likely be thrown away were they to adopt full usage of Teiid.
I also think that by doing this now, we are potentially missing an opportunity to improve our integration story for community members who might want to integrate their products with Teiid. There has been a longstanding desire to reduce the effort required to create an importer, and there is also a requirement for alternative tooling. There are a lot of balls up in the air right now and I think we should take this opportunity to look at the all of APIs that we are going to expose and rationalize them as much as possible.
My preferred approach would be to answer the big question first. What is our canonical representation of metadata? Is it DDL, or something else? Once we've done that, then we should define the APIs and tools to create the metadata, and the hooks to provide it.

Re: [teiid-dev] Connector Based Metadata
by Steven Hawkins
> Do migrating users of old implementations with their own connectors have to implement this new API, or would we make it optional because they don't use VDB free mode?
Like all of the other advanced connector scenarios, this would be an optional api.
> How many ways are we going to allow the creation of metadata, and how many is too many? Can we rationalize?
We have exactly 1 if you are referring to persistent metadata. If you are referring to the inputs to persistent metadata, then we have 1 for each of the importer types. Adding a facility for connectors to expose metadata is not attempting to replace our persistent form, it's more analogous to standardizing importers. Another conceptual model for this work is to think about the connector api as a feature full toolkit for implementing JDBC - with full database processing constructs - that dove tails into a our robust and high-performance integration story, rather than seeing connectors as being something solely for data access.
> Does this really satisfy the needs of the majority of developers?
For developers who just need simple integration and drop in usage of select non-releational sources, this is the easiest and best path that we can present.
> Is this really an easy entry point that leads to fuller adoption?
>From the rest of the dev's perspective all that matters is that it leads to adoption. Whether people need full Teiid is up to them.

I shouldn't have referred to DDL, I was thinking about the runtime model. But don't we have one already, is redefining it part of this? Won't the resolutions to these two concerns compliment each other better if they are resolved together?

No, my argument is that it does not lead them to full adoption, but rather sets up roadblocks to full adoption. See my response to Van.

I think that it's more likely that if you locked two people in separate rooms, and gave one Teiid and Connector, and gave the other the entire toolsset, they would end up with different object models. It's true that the Teiid-only user could take the sql they used in their application and past it into transformations should they decide to adopt all of the features of Teiid, but once they got a handle on all of the features, would they want the object model they built their app around, or a better one?

I heard that, and I think it's a bit of a naive question. Ive been asked by several folks if they can use the XYZ connector in AS, or Hibernate and have come to the conclusion that most folks don't know what they're asking for once you start asking questions.
