It's a memory leak. The permenant generation fills up with class/method references which should be released when the classloader is undeployed. So either there are tests that are not undeploying their test artifacts from the server or there are still references to the classloader/classes somewhere. EJB3 has had a known issue recently. JBoss5 has a problem in the VFS layer (but I don't believe that is related to the permsize) which still needs to be sorted out. I don't see any reason why we can't bootstrap the server within 64M? This used to be possible. In fact, the basic ejb server in the 2.4.x days booted and ran in 4M. :-) It is only because people keep increasing the default memory to fix the testsuite that this "bloatware" problem is not being addressed. i.e. what is using/wasting all this memory. I'd like to switch microcontainer completely over to maven builds as soon as possible. For anyone who is new to maven, some information can be found on the jboss wiki here, and more info can be found on maven site: maven.apache.org. To get started, you will have to install maven from the above site, if you don't already have it. From the command line, just type "mvn". This will call the default build phase "install" which will compile the main code and test code, run unit tests, package the files into jars, and copy them to your local repository. Some other commands that might be useful: "mvn compile" - This will only compile the main code. "mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true" - This will skip the unit tests "mvn -Dtest=org/jboss/project/MyTest" - This will run a single unit test. "mvn deploy" - This will copy the artifacts to a local checkout of the jboss repository. What other functionality is required in the maven scripts before we can remove the build.xml scripts? I did a regular expression check: plugins.[a-z\.]*spi This is the only such plugins and spi combination. I'm really in favor of moving this. But we need to fix that in the AS as well, with ServiceControllerContextAction(s). When would be an appropriate time to do that - to update the mc snapshot used with AS trunk as well? On the first example, you don't have to use an MC BeanFactory. You can use anything that implements BeanMetaDataFactory to express its dependencies (i.e. what it wants to be injected).
