Actually, the JMS spec says JMSDestination is supposed to be ignored when a message is sent, the producer's destination must be used instead, and the message's JMSDestination must be overwritten with the real destination afterwards. So I think that even checking in ProducerAspect shouldn't be done. The spec is a bit unclear since it also says that InvalidDestinationException "must be thrown when a destination is not understood by the provider". I'd take that to mean "the destination passed to createProducer/createConsumer". Also, the code currently requires JMSReplyTo to be a JBossDestination as well, I don't know if this restriction is necessary. My last statement was slightly wrong. When run in 4.0.x you can use 1.4.2 on both client and server. Yes, the API is compatible with JDK 1.1. So if you were sufficiently perverse you could write a jms client and server that ran using JDK 1.1. We are currently Java 5 only on the server side, and Java 1.4.2 or later on the client. Soon (probably remoting 2.0) we will be Java 5 or later only on the client too. Would that change also make the client side compatible with previous jdks? Although it might be considered a technically wrong interpretation, I would still classify the 1.1 specification's "JMS is compatible with JDK 1.1.x" as a hint that the client stack should not only run on 1.4, but all the way back to 1.1.
