I would suggest we have a "nick name" option as the concatenation trick could become a big problem when displayed in a list view inside a web GUI. Actions vs Services for naming... >From the user's perspective Actions are not unique since they can be reused from service to service by wiring in via the jboss-esb.xml. EPRs are "invisible" to the end-user (the developer/admin using the JBoss ESB). Kurt said a "service instance" are unique, can have multiple per EPR and you can have multiple EPRs per registered service. So that is a little bit hard to grok but might be the closest suggestion to solving the problem. Our administrator's goal is to handle a few basic situations: - What things are running? (what is this unique thing we are trying to describe) - What things are not running (or are generally unhappy)? - What do I do to go fix the thing? Hence having the .esb name and access to the jboss-esb.xml that configured the offending "thing" is very important (relates to Tom F's suggestion). The "thing" (from a user's perspective) is a "service", not an "action", not an "esb archive", not an "EPR" (never seen an EPR). [Design of JBoss Portal] - MetaBridge

To solve the problem of having our two JSF portlets (core-admin and core-wsrp) work on both JBoss AS 4.0.5 (with embedded myFaces) and JBoss AS 4.2.0 (with embedded Sun RI JSF implementation), we came up with a "MetaBridge" http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=PortalJSFMetaBridge While it worked well for our portlets, it brought a load of other issues for other portlets deployment as the core-admin (and core-wsrp) is not isolated (other portlets trying to start the meta-bridge, people willing to use myFaces instead of Sun RI...) One option would be to include the myFaces implementation inside the core-admin.sar package and isolate the sar in its own classloader, i didn't succeed unfortunately, not sure why. So the safest way would be to only support JBoss 4.2.0 and Sun RI (despite the current low quality of the portlet bridge). Thoughts ? Any idea ? If this is really going to work, then the aliases need to be a true dependencies. i.e. if I do | <deployment> | <alias name="Tomcat">JBossWeb</alias> | </deployment> | | <deployment> | <bean name="X"> | <depends>JBossWeb</depends> | </bean> | This shouldn't fail because "Tomcat" is not deployed yet. It should wait until Tomcat is deployed. And bean "X" should get undeployed when Tomcat is undeployed. Unless you can support these semantics then adding aliases outside of the deployment that creates the original isn't going to work. So some of this information we can get automagically (as long as we make sure the user can do the mapping of what we use back to the "physical" process/instance) and some of it will require the developer's input, e.g., Action class name, action instance name/id. For what I was suggesting, yes "ESB Instance" would simply to represented by the name of the .esb. It's already unique so there's no need to invent another name - and anyway, another name (e.g. defined in the .esb jboss-esb.xml config) wouldn't help someone trying to track back from a report to the actual service/action definition.
