Another approach is to create a data structure that dynamically changes based on how the node is populated. E.g., a CacheDataStructure may be a very light weight wrapper, which could create and hold a reference to a CHM only if the number of attributes crosses a threshold, and use simple object references for smaller numbers of attributes. I've seen a lot of use cases where a node holds very few (<3) attribs, often only one. Well, this threshold would be configurable, naturally. Probably relate to a function of number of hits over a given period of time rather than a fixed number of hits, as this needs to decay as well. Perhaps the same half-life parameters used for the degree of participation. Tunneling (ClusteredCacheLoader?) is pretty efficient compared to a state transfer as it only pulls back the contents of individual node as opposed to an entire region. FLUSH blocking the entire cluster for state transfer within a specific Partition would be a problem though, although Bela did mention some improvements in JGroups 2.6 that may be able to deal with this. I'm looking into this, but I'm pretty sure this issue revolves around the fact that NamingContext.removeServer(Hashtable serverEnv) only removes an entry if java.naming.provider.url is specified. In this case with JBC 2.0 and JGroups 2.5. I was thinking this might have something to do with the change introduced in http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JGRP-347[/url], but in both David's case and the referenced case the failure occurred on the coordinator. My (quite possibly incorrect) read of the code involved in JGRP-347 leads me to believe that change would only affect the non-coordinator nodes.
