The benefit to use JBoss MC for portal beans and portlet container is the capability to inject portal services in ServletContext attributes. We do that already today, declared in jboss-portlet.xml, but it is the injection of a proxy to the JMX mbean. Also it does not work with life cycle. Here we can make a portlet application or a portlet container depend on another portal service which provide a real dependency. [Design of JBoss Portal] - Portlet container update

I started to detach the portlet container stuff last week, but I have not removed it yet from 2.6 until I have the detached container able to run the testsuite using the web integration SPI. The status on the web integration SPI is that for now it works with tomcat which means that it is able to modify tomcat deployed war files to insert the request dispatch servlet and produce added/removed events to the registered listeners. This is not unit tested yet. It requires to put jars in the lib directory of tomcat and to modify tomcat conf/server.xml to add a listener class that setup the web application registry. Later of course we want to try to have other implementation of the web SPI when it is needed. I started to write a test portal based on the web SPI and the JBoss MC 2.0 Beta3 that boostrap a few beans for the moment. On the web SPI add/removed event for web applications it takes the usual PortletApplicationImpl and PortletContainerImpl and let JBoss MC take care of the instantiation and the life cycle of the beans. So this is a good progress imho (thanks Ales for helping me on that :-) ). So only the deployment stuff is integrated (yet not unit tested). What is left is the runtime stuff which consist in being able to translate web request into portlet container interactions. Previous implementation was based on the server module (in 2.6). We will probably have for now a simpler implementation for now that will use a simple servlet. I worked also on the test module and worked on having it being able to use Cargo and JBoss Remoting instead of JBoss 4.x MainDeployer and JMX Remoting. This is not yes commited in the SVN. The goal here is to be able to use the test framework with any environment since Cargo is able to deploy to multiple containers and JBoss Remoting seems to provide also an easy to use remoting layer. Since when we started using UID as ObjectIDs instead of sequence integers, A downloaded CF (non Clustered) would be invalidated. Example: | | ConnectionFactory cf = context.lookup("/ConnectionFactory"); | killServer(); | restartServer(); | cf.createConnection(); | The above code would throw an IllegalStateException ("Cannot find object in dispatcher with id " + UID); The solution for this would be simple though... (unless there is no consensus on this): - instead of creating an UID for the ConnectionFactory, we use the uniqueName, so on this case the CF would still be valid even after a restart. I believe this would be useful for some use cases, where the client keeps trying to connect until the server is online again. (doing this through an Exception Listener or something similar). Well, you are right. Toy is not the right word as it is very capable. However, for a web application framework it is a very basic requirement to be able to handle virtual hosts. I don't find it very usable for real world applications otherwise... With that said, I'm still interested in contributing to solving this issue. However, I don't see much sense in setting of patching without first having a discussion about it with the portal developers to agree on the main design. For example, we could never agree on how the portal object tree should look like with virtual host support, which I think is the main issue. The rest was quite straight forward. I went ahead and fixed this for all the Context operations, not just lookup(). If we're going to fix this we might as well really fix it. It was simple enough to encapsulate the error handling in a method and then apply it via a simple try/catch around each remote call. The class javadoc for NoSuchObjectException states that: anonymous wrote : If a NoSuchObjectException occurs attempting to invoke a method on a remote object, the call may be retransmitted and still preserve RMI's "at most once" call semantics. Based on this, it's OK to apply this to non-read methods like bind().
