The webservices frameworks is a good example where multiple projects from different 'parties' competed (and cooperated) and not all 'survived' (Not sure if 'Darwin' applies here). That is FOSS and if done in a good spirit leads to better results (see the cooperation of the portals that was recently announced). Heck, that is why I joined. And I agree with Tom that this is not the situation we are discussing here. Sure, everybody has it's preferences like me not wanting to invest to much time in DB stuff or GWT, Heiko disliking seam etc... so choices will be made that not everybody is 100% happy with. No problem, as long as there is a common goal and that definitely seems missing. Two projects within a company, no matter how they are run without a common goal (like exploring new ways) is not good imo, no matter how they are run by the project leads. Both have a limited budget I'm sure (otherwise the next communityday would for sure be down under ;-) So I do think it is a management thing, for sure... I'm making that post because when I was looking at the code, I was still considering the possiblity, but it wasn't possible. We talked through IRC today, about adding an update record when a file is reclaimed, in a way we would know how many records a transaction would have. I just realized that this information is only available when loading. We don't keep information about what transactions are current "alive" on the journal, besides when we are loading the journal. We would need to add extra control for that, and we would need then to control reclaiming of transactions. This is what I have been doing on the journal compacting. - I first need to elect what files will be compacted. This needs to be a sequential list, starting at the first file. But I can't compact a file with pending transactions as I don't know if the user will later decide for a rollback or not. - I have created another field on the Header with a orderID. The JournalFile now has a fileID and a orderID. (fileID will be aways equals to orderID with the exception on compacting files). - I open a file with the same orderID as the first file on the journal. (create or open, getting it from the list of available files). - I open a transaction on the that file, and I add a record stating that I am compacting files (with the list of fileID) - As I read the files, I add the valid records at the compacting output. When I'm done I commit the transaction at the compacting output. I keep opening files over demand (getting them from the available files list, or creating over demand) - If the server crash now, I will have the compacting record stating there are files that need to be deleted (reload will handle that also) - I now delete the old files (delete here means.. putting them back to available files). - As soon as all the files are deleted, I can delete the compacting record within the transaction. By using the transaction approach we already have in the journal, will simplify things, as we won't need any temporary files.
