Two issues: 1. the original ThreadlocalPool was designed incur zero thread contention. This changed when statistics were implemented. Right now that uses sync blocks, but it could be changed to atomics. Still it would incur a penalty. 2. a ThreadlocalPool servicing a ThreadPool with a size > 100 will always have a lower throughput than a StrictMaxPool with maximum size 100. The maximum size of ThreadlocalPool is not applicable. To really identify performance bottlenecks within enterprise beans you would need to know: - average queue size - average execution time - average wait time We also need to microbench all the pool implementations to see their effect on throughput & average response time. At the moment we thought of adding this to the identity project but I'll let Anil and Jeff comment on this. At least at this stage this makes sense I think as this is specific to the WSTrustClient. Yes, providing jaxws handlers for calling the STS is probably the easiest way here. I think the issue Anil's referring too is that "basic" security configuration (enc/dec and sign) is different from stack to stack, because of the different ws-security implementations, hence the need for having 3 different handlers. Have you tried http://sonar.codehaus.org? With http://docs.codehaus.org/display/SONAR/Sonar+Plugin+Library like: TagList, Jira, Hudson, Emma, Technical debt, Metrics Analytics, etc etc.. All the fun of the code analysis tools support in maven with non of the maven config hassle.. If default installed on the local machine(with no external database), all you have to do is: - start sonar - run "mvn sonar:sonar" on _any_ project and your done.. It will then run, findbugs, pmd, cpd, checkstyle, ckjm, taglist, surefire, ++(depending on server config) and summarize it all up into categories of issues with priority. It has rulesets to ignore a lot of the default checkstyle/findbugs warnings so you don't get spamed with 3000 tab/space issues etc.. You can of course drill down into the diff findings in a nice little ajaxy web app. It also keeps state for each run, so you can see timeline changes in the different areas. It nicely keeps the project version number as markers on the timeline, so you can compare the development.. For example, in one of the cases where we switched the configuration to use the StrictMaxPool, I had to set it to 6 million to get rid of the timeouts, and throughput still went up. In the other case, the configuration was only 100 (on both ThreadLocalPool and StrictMaxPool), and throughput increase by 300 transactions per second. I'm starting this thread because I have been bothered for awhile about this instance pool. In two situations (both of which I cannot reference publicly, but anyone wants to have a private conversation I can explain), where we switched from the ThreadLocalPool to StrictMaxPool throughput of a large scale test improved. On the surface it appears that using a ThreadLocal is just adding overhead, and not providing any real benefit. In looking at the code, it appears we don't get any of the benefits of using a ThreadLocal, where you shouldn't need any synchronization, and are just adding overhead with the get calls to access the pool. This seems like the wrong use case for using ThreadLocal to me. Thoughts? [jBPM Development] - Drag and Drop process deployment?

Is there any interest in Drag and Drop process deployment and listing jBPM contents (e.g. process definitions) as a filesystem? I realised that it was relatively easy to create WebDav visibility of jBPM based on my CalDav wrapper (see earlier post): http://www.jboss.org/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=154720 The basic prototype proved straightforward and now need feedback on the value before taking it further. I've tested access from Kubuntu to jBPM on a Windows box. Processes are just listed as directory entries and deploying is as simple as 'dropping' a process archive file in to the directory. At the moment I don't list process versions but believe this can be done as per the WebDav RFCs. I'm not sure of the general take up of WebDav and therefore value of pursuing this. Also, unfortunately the Eclipse WebDav plugin doesn't seem to be supported any longer. P.S. Windows Explorer as a client needs a bit of tweaking but same principle applies. P.P.S.
