Looks like it is getting close - now its something on the eclipse
build/test cycle, which means it got through everything else (I

Question about Metadata for Rules

Hello everybody,
I have a simple question about annotations for rules. Is it possible to add
metadata
to a rule in the following or in a similar way?

The annotatons should also be accesible within my java program otherwise it
wouldn't be very useful at all. So for example I should be able to do the

Why would I like to have such meta information along with my rules in one
file? ... here it comes ...
The result of firing all my rules is a list of all rules (whether they have
been fired or not)
with certain meta information.
On the lhs of each rule I append an entry to that list with all the meta
information. Depending
on the inserted facts only a subset of all my rules fires and only a few
rules will add entries to
the list. My problem is that I want the rules that havn't been fired to
appear in the list with all
the meta information.
A possible but not feasible solution would be to double all my rules. For
each rule I could
add second rule that fires if the original rule doesn't fire and this newly
added rule inserts the
entry in the list with all the meta information. Doubling the number of
rules makes editing rules
error prone and tedious.
Another strategy could be to put all the meta information in a separate
file. Via the rule name
all meta information could be uniquely assigned to one rule. This strategy
is also not very appealing
since I have a lot of rules and editing rules again becomes error prone and
tedious, since I have to
keep the metadata file in sync.
The by far best solution I can think of is to allow annotaions in the drl
file as shown above.
Any hints or suggestions about the stated problem are highly appreciated.

/me so frustrated about javadoc build

It seems that the javadoc tool is upset by "not well formed" "tags" in javadoc.
These specific ones are needed by GWT 1.4:
@gwt.typeArgs <foo.Bar>
There is nothing in the spec that says that javadocs have to be well
formed, and it is a bug in javadoc (which has been corrected - just
not sure in what version).
I tried to tell maven not to bother about javadocs for that package
(as its not really an API to reuse) but to no avail.
I am out of ideas - anyone?

SMF drools 4.x

I am old school drools 2.x and had created based on the HOUSE example created by own SMF DSL based on drools 2.x.
Than had to take a sabbatical from that project.
As of today, I have been asked to resurrect that project and not a whole lot of drools 2.x has made it to 4.x and of course would like to remain current.
My implementation had an expression engine ( SableCC ) that I had fused in with a customized Semantic Module.
I can get more information out for u , if there is a way to resuse some code.
Any pointers as to how to go about doing this will be highly appreciated.

StatefulSession Marshalling

New code has been added for a higly efficient binary protocol
marshalling for stateful sessions. While Drools 4 supported standard
serialisation of Working Memories, it used the default serialisation,
this is both very slow and memory bloating. It also has the problem that
it just serialises the user objects with it.
The Marshalling implementation allows for a strategy approach when
handling the marshalling of user objects. You register different
strategies for different namespaces. Currently we have two strategies,
Serialised and Identity. Serialised just writes the user object to the
stream via standard read/write methods. Identity assigns the user object
an id, from an int counter, and places it in a map and writes the id to
the stream. Reading in uses that map to lookup the user object. Identity
strategy is thus stateful, write method can only be called once read can
be called repeatedly. Other strategies will be added, such as hibernate
Placeholder support. Users can of course write there own.
So what does this give?
-Session pause/resume, ideal for moving a session to a new server or
restarting an existing server.
-General snapshotting, backup. You could do a poor man's high
availability by snapshotting the session at the end of each transaction.
Later we will be extending this binary protocol to support journalling
and also replication via clustering.
-Pre-loaded session templates. If you repeatedly create stateful
sessions with the same base set of data and the insertion time is
annoying, now you can just populate the session once and write out to a
byte[] and use that as a template for further session creations.
-Long term persistence, needed for our process integration work.

The DefaultMarshalling uses the Identity strategy if it is not passed a
strategy factory. The Identity strategy is used throughout the tests.

The read/write marshalling is maintained in two files ReadMarshaller and
WriteMarshaller, this will allow better handling of backwards
compatiblity in the future.

It's still very alphaware, but please do start trying it. I need to tidy
up the debug output and will do that soon, I'll probably make each
read/write method take a String which will be written to the log when
debug is on. It currently sorts a number of map/set data structures,
this is for debugging so that testing can round trip for data loss, I
will make sure that it can be disabled for production. The following
types don't yet marshall, not sure how to handle date/time stuff at the
moment:
Temporal Sessions do not marshall
Scheduled rules, duration attribution do not marhsall
Implementations have not been added for accumulate, collect, from and
rightinputadapter.
We are just hooking up the process marshalling into this at the moment.

I am currently working on JIRA

names to contain an apostrophe character ( ' )). The problem is caused
by using rule name inputted by users as the name to add a node, see
below (in PackageItem.java):

The javax.jcr.Node.addNode(String relPath, String primaryNodeTypeName)
method will through RepositoryException if the relPath parameter
contains apostrophe character ( ' ). Had a quick check with JSR-170, it
is true that apostrophe character ( ' ) is not allowed in a path name.
Section 4.6:
char ::= nonspace | ' '
nonspace ::= (* Any Unicode character except: '/', ':', '[', ']', '*',
''', '"', '|' or any whitespace
character *)
There are two possible ways I can think of to have this fixed, none of
them are ideal though.
a. We valid the rule name inputted by users, the validation rule is in
line with JSR-170. This approach is not ideal because a rule named
"Jervis' rule" is perfect valid in my opinion.
b. Somehow we transform the rule name to sth else if it is not a valid
relative path according to JSR-170. This approach may require a data
structure somewhere to store the original rule name and transformed
relative path name. As I am pretty new to Drools, I am not sure how to
best get this done.
Any thoughts or suggestions are highly welcome.
