Optimizing for local calls is huge - avoiding the rmi call stack and the serialization is orders of magnitude faster. What if we went back to the original isLocalInterceptor mechanism and didn't use the ejbName to determine whether the bean was local? (we did the lookup in the EJB3Registry based on a unique name, so the isLocal() test would not get confused between a local instance of a bean vs a remote instance. The proxy has the container object name - what if we made that unique (add a VM specific or timestamp as a parameter of the container object name)?? What's the size of TESTS-Testsuite.xml? If you reach 100MB, setting Xmx to a higher value will not help you anymore. see http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBQA-620 for more infos. Agreed. So, IMO FirstAvailable.electedTarget shouldn't be transient. That also implies IsLocalInterceptor shouldn't try to optimize the call locally (at least not for an SFSB...) Which leads to this. Assume we fix FirstAvailable so the remote target survives: 1) IsLocalInterceptor precedes ClusterChooserInterceptor 2) IsLocalInterceptor lets the call go through as remote 3) Call fails. Likely. The parent bean failed over, pretty likely child will as well. 4) ClusterChooserInterceptor picks a new target -- the local machine. 5) Call goes through and we get the EJBTHREE-881 failure. Perhaps the solution here lies more in the direction of my hacky Option B, way back when. Find a way to signal to TxPropagationInterceptor that a call that was thought to be remote has ended up going locally. IsLocalInterceptor adds some transient invocation metadata or something. The testsuite often fails during execution of the task "reports" with an out of memory error, and the fix is to rerun the reports task with ANT_OPTS=-Xmx512m or some similar higher memory value. The setting for ANT_OPTS appears in the build.sh script used to start the testsuite and is set to -Xmx256m. The target reports does not always fail with the present setting, but it does happen fairly frequently. Can we make this a permanent change, to say 512m? The use case you just described for EJBTHREE-773 is the typical one I hear about when people complain about the local optimization. In a way, I like not forcing the call to go locally, as it removes a mechanism whereby an SFSB could end up being invoked on 2 different servers. (I just opened a related thread on the proper behavior of the FirstAvailable load balance policy, please see http://www.jboss.com/index.html?module=bb&op=viewtopic&t=103967. Bill B, you're listed as original author on FirstAvailable, so any comments on that thread are appreciated.) Re: the 2 cluster problem, should the partition name be part of the ejbName for a clustered EJB? That doesn't really solve the problem though, as you can have two network-isolated clusters both named DefaultPartition.
