Naive questions on rules

Hi All, I am not sure whether it is the right place to put this question here. Currently I am working on rules and got confused with some concepts: What are the relationships between: resolution, backward chaining, modus ponens, foward chaining, production rule system, prolog, logic programming? Can all forward chaining systems be considered as logic programming system? Some of these concepts seems overlap with each other. Can somebody kindly give me an answer to these questions. Score standardization in drools-solver: going beyond a double

Hi guys, I 'd like to redesign the current score subsystem in drools-solver, but I 'd like your thoughts on it. Basically I feed the subsystem a Solution instance on which the DRL rules calculate a score (currently a double). Here are my thoughts, feed-back very welcome: Score function standardization ============================== - Currently a score is a double and that just won't do - Different types of scores should be implementable: -- just a (hard) constraint total, as an int -- just a (hard) constraint total, as a double -- a hard and a soft constraint total, as 2 ints -- a total for each constraint, as seperate ints -- custom implementations => So there should be a Score interface => Build-in implementation of HardAndSoftScore and IntScore? - Any 2 scores of the same problem should be comperable for recognizing the best solution => The score interface must implement Comperable and have the method compareTo(Score) - A score shouldn't change -- So it can be compared to in later steps -- You can't do that with the current ScoreCalculator instance as it changes all the time. -- So they can be collected for statistical information - A score should be thread-safe if possible => A Score implementation should be immutable - A score should be made by the drl, once for every fireAllRules = calculateScore -- What if I start adding move generation and move implementation into the drl later? That lifecycle match won't fit no more? Should I look into agenda's or flow? - Should a score be put into a global variable directly or still into a global ScoreCalculator (=ScoreHolder?) instance? What's the point of the latter? Extra ===== - Any 2 scores of the same problem can also be compared on a different than normal scale to pick the next step: -- For recalling the best solution, a hard constraint outweighs any soft constraint. -- For deciding the next step, a hard constraint can be weighted into the soft constraints, if hard constraints haven't been broken much in x steps. -- That weighting into can differ from step to step, so it should be supplied by the caller --- Should that weighting be just an int, or something more complex? Let's call it an Equalizer for now. => The Score interface must have a method compareTo(Score, Equalizer) -- With kind regards, Geoffrey De Smet

Performance Question

Hello all, This is the set of rules i have rule "IP Route File rule" salience 2000 when Line ( line matches "^.*\s+show\s+ip\s+route\s*$" ) Line ( line matches "^.*\s+dest\s+address\s*$ ) file : FileFinder() then file.setFileType("ip route file"); drools.halt(); end All I am doing in rules is, I read each line from the given file, convert them into Line Objects and see if any of my rules matches. There are about 50 such rules, that will help me differentiate what kind of file is present in my input directory. The question I have , is there a way I can know if Line Object matched any of the rules ? If a Line Object is not matched by any of rules, I can just retract that object from the memory and prevent Out of Memory Exception if the file size is huge Thanks Shiva

Hi Dave, Excellent! I will try to explain the current situation and one possible solution, but you may have better ideas. Functions in Drools are compiled as simple static methods in a generated java class. We use MVEL Templates to generate the code of the class and the static method. Take a look at JavaFunctionBuilder.java class for the code generation call and at javaFunction.mvel for the code template. Now, the problem with globals is that they are scoped to sessions, not rulebases, so you can not resolve them until runtime. You can not for instance, make them a static reference of the generated class and set it at rulebase compilation time. So, my suggestion would be to: 1. at compile time, use JavaDialect.analyzeBlock() method to analyze and find out what are the globals that are used by the funcion method code. 2. modify the code generation to add parameters to that in the method call. So, if "log" is a global and if the function is declared like this: function void someFunction( String param ) { // ... code ... log.something(...); // ... code ... } you detect the use of "log" and add it as a parameter of the generated method: ... public static void someFunction( Logger log, String Param ) { ... } ... This way, at runtime we can inject the parameter into the call. You can look at JavaConsequenceBuilder.java and javaInvokers.mvel to see how we do kind-of the same thing for consequences. 3. Now the most interesting part. :) We use an ANTLR grammar for parsing Java code blocks. You need to change the parser to rewrite any function call the user is doing in his code to inject the log parameter transparently. I did the very same thing for modify blocks: modify( $something ) { ... } It is not hard once you get the hang of it. It is a bit of "hand work" though. Look at the JavaConsequenceBuilder.fixModifyBlocks() for what I did. Also, the ANTLR Java grammar is java.g. Let me know if you have questions or if you have a better idea, and welcome aboard! For example, some of the current event processing products are descendents of the active database research that misses efficient (formal) handling of termination, priority ordering, and confluence in rule bases. AI and especially symbolic (for example, logic-based) approaches provide native background for the (formal) representation of the above mentioned missing concepts, enabling evolution from event processing systems into intelligent reactive systems. The work done in temporal logic, spatial reasoning, knowledge representation, ontologies, and so on enables more declarative representation of events and actions and their semantic processing. Contextual reasoning can support complex event prediction. Transactional logic can be used for ensuring the consistency between highly dependent processes in a formal way. On the other side, the heterogeneous and highly distributed nature of event-processing systems, especially on the web, provides new challenges for AI and logics, like the contextualized reasoning over large stream data, scalable mapping of complex structures, or distributed approximate reasoning, to name but a few. Rules Complexity

Our clients needs an AML (Anti Money Lanudering) Monitoring system to be implemented. This system is suppose to monitor the customer, transaction and historical data and generate alerts based on the rules set by the clients. As we are in design and thought process of it, we thought of Drools for this. Our doubts are 1) Are we going in the right direction by using Drools? 2) Can we compare the current data and historical data and do a link analysis using Drools? 3) Can we represent sequential patterns of rules in Drools? 4) DRL or XML format of rules, which is the best method to represent rules? I tried writing complex rules using Drools, but not getting the flexibility. For eg: we need a rule as following: 1. Check the transactions of a non customer on the same day or short period (configurable) 2. Check if all the transactions' originator and beneficiary information are same or not. 3. If transaction amounts are of very small, calculate aggregate and find the sum crosses the threshold limit or not. If yes, raise the alert. Data Set is the list of non customers. From this list, while running the rule, how will I write the rule to find the aggregate for each of the customer and check the threshold? Warm Regards, Rajitha
