Secretly I am hoping we can reopen the "switch to JDK 6 for
drools 6"

It's been almost a year since we had a "switch to JDK 6" discussion.
+1 on moving to JDK 6 (if possible). We can easily avoid using the
String.isEmpty method, but there are other things, like, from my point of
view, the possibility to invoke the javac compiler directly from the code,
that could be very handy in a near future.
