Hi guys,
Many people don't subscribe to the user mailing list because they don't
want to litter their mailbox.
So instead, they start mailing dev's directly, which we don't want.
One solution is gmane.org.
Gmane turns our mailing lists into newsgroups,
so if they direct their e-mail client to this newsgroup url
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.drools.user
they can ask a question without littering their mailbox.
I propose we add another column to this page
http://www.jboss.org/drools/lists.html
with the title
Newsgroup (doesn't litter mailbox)
Which has a link to these url's:
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.drools.user
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.drools.devel

I agree - do we need the nntp? those who use news readers still (!)
would know what to do - could we just link to the http interface if we
don't already.
In terms of finding answers - google indexes the mailing lists just
fine, I often find answers myself that way ! so the read only aspect
is ok.
What is the experience like if people want to post to the lists from
gmane etc? Does it actually work? I have never tried it myself, always
been a mailing list fan myself (but that is changing, its just too
much to keep up with).

start using project A (xstream) and want to post to the mailing list of
A (gmane.comp.java.xstream.user), I only have to verify my first post.

will stop him from contacting developers directly (and lose the benefit

great - I totally agree. Email is not for everyone. I tend to check
lists "offline" on my phone, well some lists (like this) so I like
lists. But for larger groups of people, forums are probably better.
Eg if you want help with your PS3, you will end up on a forum, not a
mailing list.
Perhaps, in time - the drools-user list will end up more as a forum,
but I see the dev list probably staying as a mailing list with
nabble/gmane forum-like access.
Other projects I have noted have the split: developers of the project
work on the mailing list, but users are on a forum.

I don't have the login to the CMS - Mark are you able to dig it up? And can
we give the login to others in the community so it is spread around a bit?
(it has a simple WYSIWYG interface for editing the website - pretty easy to
use - although a bit strange and CMS like at first - not a wiki).

we give the login to others in the community so it is spread around a bit?
(it has a simple WYSIWYG interface for editing the website - pretty easy to
use - although a bit strange and CMS like at first - not a wiki).
