Ben Wang and I are intermittently seeing this file permission problem
when starting an "all" server built from AS trunk. I thought it had gone
away after I updated yesterday, but apparently not, as it just happened
again. This is on a Win XP system, in case that's relevant. The app
being deployed here is ROOT.war; I believe Ben's seen it with a zipped
war as well.

I see no indication of a read error. This:

is just a file system driver message. I also never see the permission
denied error Brian indicates. Its always this readBytes
java.io.IOException: Read error during an xml parse.
About all I can think to do at this point is to write my own readBytes
jni method that mirrors that jdk version to see if I can reproduce the
error with more info from the system routines.

What I mean, there was no detailed exception message,
because the JVM is stupid in that area:
... in handleRead:
if (h == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) {
return -1;
}
Later it calls GetLastError() in readBytes if
handleError returns -1, and that is always 0 (no error)
and the thrown is "Read error".
Not sure how get the filename that is problematic, but
that's for you to find thought ;)

This is screwy. I could not reproduce the error running with the
wrapper. When I went back to the running without the wrapper I still
could not reproduce it. It had been happening nearly every startup prior
to that.
I still had the extra "." in the boot classpath. Once I removed that,
its happening consistently again.

Right. I faced that too (as well as slowing down the
process CPU resolves the issues) occasionally.
Delete server/default/tmp, work, as well as all
nestedjarNNNN.tmp files from the system temp directory.
(The latest being a real problem, because each JBoss
run/stop leaves 350Kb of trash in the System Temp directory)
One note:
Use the Sysinternals DebugView, to see the outputs
from the OutputDebugString trace function.

I had better luck by hacking up the FileInputStream/FileDescriptor to
track where a handle was closed and resued in a read. One example of a
read attempt on a closed handled shows its the VirtualFile finalizer
closing its streams causing the problem. Since a VirtualFile is not the
required path to an input stream, we can't be closing its streams just
because its garbage collected. If this is the only path to ensuring
streams are closed, we'll have to add reference counting logic to
prevent closure of in use streams. Not sure why this seems to be much
more prevalent on win32.
