I do use one on my desktop now, and it's very nice for certain things,
but I think you're getting a bigger performance benefit on a laptop
(the big downside is since you can only fit one drive usually, you
have to spend a lot if you need something which has the usual
capacity).
Used to have an Alienware dual hd raid laptop. It blew up after a year
(video) and I gave up trying to get their support to help me. That's
when I bought a macbook.
